Evaluating Wikipedia as a Source of Audit Evidence

Click Here for Registration and More Information

Trudi Jacobson, Distinguished Librarian, University at Albany (Retired)

Learning Objectives:

Understanding how Wikipedia works and how to use its underlying information to evaluate the objectivity, credibility, and reliability of the public pages.

Wikipedia is testimonial evidence, even though it is in written form, just like an email is testimonial evidence. Regardless of which auditing standards you follow, you are required to evaluate your audit evidence, including testimonial evidence' and as it turns out, there are ways to evaluate the information you find in Wikipedia.

What the community of experts (and there are many communities of experts that review the content of Wikipedia) have discussed about the content. You can even find out where information came from and go back to that original source. Learn how you can access the back end of Wikipedia and even post and review content yourself.

You are encouraged to bring along a laptop or tablet to follow along. You can do it on a smart phone, but having a larger screen will be helpful.
