In this presentation we will overview the critical steps in an effective interview and/or interrogation and discuss truth and deception. The majority of the day and exercises, however, will be focused on developing “rapport on purpose”.

Program Description

When you really think about what it is that you do every day it is asking complete strangers (witnesses, victims and perpetrators) to is share secrets. Things they would rather avoid talking about, have been hiding and/or fear could come back to haunt them on the job or in their personal life.

So, one of the fundamental questions becomes why do you open up to some people and close up to others?

  • Do you fully share information with people who are or appear to be judgmental, condescending, accusatory, authoritarian, sarcastic and eye rolling?
  • Or, do you open up to others, even strangers, who seem to be like you and understand your situation? People like people who are like themselves.

Rapport is a critical component of every interview situation and the return on your investment of a small amount of time can be huge. What we are saying is that everyone has the ability to develop rapport ON PURPOSE. Yes, this skill can even help you have a quality conversation with that relative that’s always at the family gatherings, but you’ve never really talked with. Yes, maybe there is a reason your significant other/spouse doesn’t understand you and/or see the logic in your point of view.

Speaker Bio:

Mr. McNall has dedicated 50 years to Service, Training and Consulting in the Public Safety field.  He was a founder of BowMac Educational Services Inc. and BowMac Software, Inc. BowMac Educational Services Inc. is a nationally recognized provider of high-quality public safety training. BowMac Software, Inc. is a market leader in providing web-based emergency management solutions to private and public organizations that assist in their NIMS/ICS compliance.

After graduating from the University of Dayton with a degree in Criminal Justice, he started his career in Detroit, graduating from the Detroit Police Academy in 1968. In 1975 Mr. McNall was offered a position of Associate Director at the Regional Criminal Justice Training Center in Rochester, New York where he served until 1984. He assisted in the founding and growth of this nationally recognized training agency supervising the day-to-day operations of the Police Academy’s staff.

In 1980, Mr. McNall, and then Sgt. Lou Campanozzi, Rochester Police Department Homicide, designed and delivered the first Interview and Interrogation Course in Connecticut for the statewide academy. This course has been delivered multiple times per year, every year since. The CT State Police Union pays for several courses each year due to membership demand.

In December 1984, Mr. McNall left the Training Center to pursue a full-time career with BowMac Educational Services Inc. The over-riding philosophy of its training programs is to provide the participants with reality-based training, utilizing working professionals and hands-on exercises designed to improve performance.  Mr. McNall has conducted Interrogation, Critical Incident Management and Community Oriented Policing training in major cities such as New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago as well the smallest communities in New York, Pennsylvania, Colorado and New Mexico. 

BowMac was selected to conduct its unique Critical Incident Management Training in Panama and other Central American Countries by the Justice Department. BowMac currently has five “Simulation Based Command & and Initial Response” courses certified by the Department of Homeland Security making them eligible for grant funding.

Mr. McNall is co-author of the book “Critical Incident Management”, A Complete Response Guide, 2nd Edition from CRC Press which supports the “Concept of Operations” that permeates the training and emergency management software.

Mr. McNall also served as Executive Director of the International Organization of Youth Courts from 1989 to 1992. The IOYC is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote and assist in establishing youth courts in communities across the nation.  Youth Courts are peer courts operated by youth that, with training and adult advisement, hear and adjudicate actual cases involving other youth.

In 2016, BowMac Educational Services, Inc. was transitioned to a Utah based company, Response Solutions, Inc. and became BowMac/RSI, Inc. Mr. McNall serves as their Customer Relationships and Sales Manager.
