Audits and Investigations: Making Horse Sense

The New York State Racing and Wagering Board’s Audits and Investigations Unit utilizes the services of specialized Racing Investigators and Financial Auditors to investigate allegations of horse racing misconduct and fraud. Joel Leveson, Director of Investigations, and Patrick Wade, Associate Accountant, discuss how investigative work in the field and forensic auditing complement, and sometimes complicate, the investigative process.

Case Study: The Breeders Cup Pick 6 Scandal

The Breeders Cup Pick 6 Scandal was the largest attempted sports fraud in United States history. Joel Leveson and Patrick Wade will detail how three fraternity brothers capitalized on inherent flaws in the computerized bet processing system and weak internal controls to nearly walk away with $3.1 million.
